Job Overview
Location: Havelock, Ontario
Structure: Detached bungalow with adjacent lake boathouse
Problem: Skunk activity and burrowing beneath the boathouse
Service: Skunk removal and ground-level exclusion
Visits: 2
Summary
Our team completed a two-visit skunk removal and exclusion service at a residential property in Havelock. Activity was traced to burrowing beneath a raised section of the boathouse. The work focused on humane eviction using one-way doors and the installation of buried galvanized steel mesh to prevent re-entry. A final visit confirmed successful exclusion and no further wildlife activity.
Background / Property Context
The property includes a detached bungalow with a nearby lake boathouse constructed with raised sections and exposed ground-level gaps. The surrounding terrain consists of soil and gravel, which can be susceptible to burrowing wildlife when not properly screened.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated skunk activity around the boathouse, raising concerns about denning beneath the structure and ongoing disturbance on the property.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified signs of burrowing along the side of the boathouse, particularly at a raised portion close to the main structure. The exposed perimeter and soft soil conditions provided suitable access for wildlife to dig underneath.
Cause Analysis
Skunks commonly seek sheltered den sites beneath decks, sheds, and boathouses, especially where soil is easy to excavate. Raised structures without buried perimeter screening can allow wildlife to access protected spaces. Proximity to natural cover and water further increased the likelihood of denning activity in this area.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, the technician installed humane one-way doors to allow any animals inside to exit without the ability to return. Due to the potential presence of more than one animal species, two doors were installed to accommodate different sizes. This approach ensured non-lethal removal in line with accepted wildlife control practices.
Exclusion & Repairs
A trench approximately one foot deep and six inches outward was excavated along roughly twenty-five feet of the affected perimeter. Galvanized steel mesh was installed and buried to create a continuous underground barrier, then secured along the base of the structure. This exclusion prevents future burrowing while allowing proper drainage and ventilation.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way doors were removed, all access points were sealed, and the full exclusion was inspected. No additional signs of skunk or other wildlife presence were observed after completion.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over two visits by our technician, Grant, with attention to ground conditions and structure layout. All exclusion materials were securely installed, and the final inspection confirmed the integrity of the barrier system.
